Ch 5, Part 3: The Third Floor

The heroes carefully loot before withdrawing for yet more rest.

The following day they return to find the place once more dark and foreboding. They begin exploring the third level and quickly encounter resistance. They slay a night with two shadows, after which the darkness once more lifts.

Continuing, they meet two barbed devils whom they battle during which reinforcements arrive in the form of imps and large gargoyles. They abling defeat the devils and continue their exploration of the third level. Once more they battles some gargoyles as well as two bone devils.

Ch 5 Part 2: The Chained Spirit

The heroes explore the old haunted castle, they make their way through several rooms finding little of interest (apart from the occassion brain hungry zombie). They avoid any double doors and explore only rooms and doors with a single door.

The Chained Spirit

Eventually they find trouble a spirit wrapped in chains and accompanied by several spectres. It is a difficult fight in which Sol dies and rises again as a spectre. However the tenacity of the heroes eventually sees them prevail.


After the spirits death they learn something more of the nature of Scarwall. First all the doom and gloom lifts from the castle and second an spirit appears and thanks them for lifting the curse. He mentions the Serithtial and its location in the star tower.

However the victory is short lived as the spirit ghost rises again and the doom and gloom of scarwall returns. The heroes wisely retreat not prepared to face the spirit again while weakened after battle.

They exit scarwall and rest once more in the old barbican before returning the following day. They avoid the spirit for now and focus on other areas. Again most rooms are empty but in the castle kitchens they encounter another haunting and are blasted by a powerful ectoplasmic blast fire, followed by two burning ghouls. The hereos dispatch them and continue their mission.

The Night Hag

In other rooms they kill more zombies and also some skeletal minotaurs before they encounter a hag who at first tries to fool the heroes by disguising herself as a captive halfling. The ruse was quickly seen through and instead the hag congratulated the heroes for seeing through her bluff and instead offers an alliance. She is looking for souls and spirits to claim for her own.

Gritt in particular takes offense at this and tells her her soul stealing days are over. A quick fight follows where the night hag is slain.

More exploring sees them enter the castle courtyard which adjoins to the stables, remembering Zellara's song they deduce that a dragon resides within, so they withdraw to rest and prepare.

The Umbral Dragon

The following day they face the dragon and sure enough it emerges to meet them. The heroes handle themselves well and defeat it without too much trouble. Inside they find a decent hoard of treasure which they claim and once more withdraw to rest and recover.

Yet another day and they return once more. With courtyard clear they begin they have access to the west wing, which they start to explore.

First they encounter two comedic ghosts of odd appearance one short and one tall. They banter and converse with the heroes, however after a short while their idiocy has an affect on the heroes, infecting them with general dim wittedness.

The heroes quickly fight back and cut up their ethereal opponents. Contining they kill more zombies before they enter a ballroom with a rose glass ceiling, it is a spectacular room but also hides a deadly menace. A spirit descends from the ceiling surrounding by numerous dancing ghosts. Almost all the heroes succumb to the spirits aura and begin  to dance about the room.

The Danse Macabre

Fortunately Mandraiv and Artox, with the help of Shadowcount Sol and Slyvania are able to slay it.
