Ch 2, Part 3: Pestilence

Pestilence

The following day the heroes collect their reward from the Bank of Abadar for successfully investigating Zendra’s miracle cure. They then spend the rest of the day on personal errands. Sparrowhawk claims her Hippogriff from the Great Tower and Sol seeks council at the Bank of Abadar about his personal (and conflicted) views on the tenants of his faith.

Also during the day, Sparrowhawk begins showing symptons of Blood Veil. After visiting several churches it becomes apparent that securing a remove disease spell is particularly tricky. They learn that the Town Guard has been rationed two spells per day and that also (for the right price) healing can be secured at the Bank of Abadar.

Of more troubling to some is that the Sanctuary of Shelyn, being less well resourced than the other churches was mobbed by desperate patrons. Its gardens and artworks destroyed or trampled. The heroes arrive to find Slyvana in tears and squad of guards stationed in front of the shrine.

Also that day, Justin offers his pipe of haunting to the Church of Sarenrae, so they can strike terror into the churchs faithful and sending them fleeing from the churchs doors. Therefore by Justin's reasoning keep the church safe from the mob. Gwen of course politely declines.

Ruan's Ruin

Later that evening while returning to the three rings tavern the heroes notice an elven woman shadowing them. They intercept her and discover that she was trying to summon the courage to ask the heroes for aid. Her name is Deyanira Mirukova, a famed musical prodigy and her half-elf brother Ruan has gone missing, not returning from a lavish Masquerade ball that the noble family of the Carowyns were holding. She informs them that to take their minds of the plague that was ravaging Korvosa these nobles had planned to hold one long party while the city was suffering through the epidemic.
Her brother was due to return two nights ago. She went to the manor but found that it was suspiciousily silent. The heroes agree to help her; Justin first demands payment in the form of a musical tribute to help spread word of their deeds. Mandraiv as usual, takes the opportunity to keep pushing Mandraiv’s Maginificant Seven as the name of their heroic group.

The heroes snuck around the back of the manor to investigate. They found the place filled with diseased corpses and zombies... and a mad elf-woman controlling the zombies. The heroes of course vanquished the zombies and apprehend the criminal elf. Interrogations were difficult and she seemed unfazed by any sort of intimidation. Through her mad rambling they eventually learn that Fyffe sent her and also supplied her with the disease (which is infact Vorals Phage, not Blood Veil). Watson finds the elf woman particularly repulsive and gags her several times (after other party members remove the gag for further questioning)
They also find out that Fyffe took the young varisian half-elf away for experimentation and that Fyffe his somewhere in a hidden lab with the city.

Further searching of the manor, finds the Lord of the manor, Aurio Carowyn hidden in a secret ‘panic’ room in the cellar; where he has lived in relative safety, regularly raiding the cellar for wines. He is intoxicated which particularly enrages Watson who is disgusted that he has been living in comfort while everyone was slain above.

Plague Rats

Later the heroes bring the mad elf woman to the guard, where the Cressida Kroft promises to see her trialled and punished.

Upon leaving Citadel Volyshenek they meet a middle aged woman with yellow eyes, she asks the heroes for help. She is a wererat and informs them that a local member of the wererat community is agitating for war against Korvosa while the city is steeped in chaos. She has seen the results of such actions before and doesn’t want to see another government sponsored rat purge. She asks that they find this wererat, named Girrigz and silence him. She also asks the heroes to try to avoid harming the other foolish wererats that have joined his cause.
