Ch 2, Part 4: Epidemic

Plague Rats

The heroes purchase an assortment of silver weapons before delving into the sewers below Midland. It doesn’t take them long to locate the wererat hide out and before long the assault begins. A number of wererats and their rat brethren try to defend their home but it is a lost cause.

The heroes initially try to avoid using lethal force but when Watson gets hurt, he becomes enraged and starts trying to kill them; others follow suit after Justin confirms that the wererats are evil. They fight their way to face Girrigz who proves a dangerous opponent; almost killing Watson with two well places strikes with his rapier. Fortunately sheer weight of numbers sees Girrigz fall; though after Watson is roused he remains in a state of shock that a pointy rapier can hurt someone so much.

They thoroughly loot the lair, also finding a trapped Otyugh that they leave alone.

Epidemic

Upon return to city; the heroes set about licking their wounds. There is a risk that some of the heroes have been afflicted with lycanthropy; furthermore some of the heroes are showing signs of sickness. Poor Justin seems to have contracted both Vorel’s Phage and Blood Veil.

They secure Archbanker Tuttle’s healing services and successfully address the issue of lycanthropy. Only Watson had contracted it and he was successfully healed. The diseases on the other hand prove more difficult. They try using their potions of remove disease but they are too weak to overcome the disease.

Given that healing magic is in high demand and difficult to procure without bleeding the heroes dry of funds they choose to try and beat the diseases naturally. Two days of rests shows it to be futile. While the heroes could eventually fight the disease naturally with the aid of lesser restoration spells, the epidemic meant that the longer they stayed in the city, the more chance that the other heroes would catch Blood Veil.

They come to a decision that they need to stop the plague first, before trying to rest and recuperate.
