Concerning Reports
When Dahninos had
ascended to the position of High Banker, he knew the new title would prove
challenging. He looked out over Axis from his balcony, through the streets and
spires, all perfectly aligned and orderly asthey should be and allowed himself
a brief smile as he watched the messengers delivering the hourly balance
sheets. They darted with precision and grace around the city staying
respectfully clear of the clergy, merchants and visiting rulers and their
guardians. Although there wasn't any need for guardians as this was the plane
of Law, it was tradition.
"Tradition was an important foundation for a strong community"
the Master had decreed, and as he watched, Dahninos agreed that Archons
certainly looked resplendent in their formations.
Turning from the balcony he looked down at the report in his hand and
his smile turned to an expression of concern. The report noted that a young
cleric in Korvosa had been rising in power, doing a number of services for the
community. He and his companions had routed some of the burdens that had been
draining the city of its resources, taxing the local economy. This was duly
expected from his Lords clerics, however there were further concerning notes.
Although a couple of criminals had been wiped from the slate, they were not
brought to face the appointed judiciary and the Law was not seen to be strictly
followed. This wasn't a good sign, the Law must be upheld! Even though this
young cleric himself was conflicted with this issue, which was reassuring,
there was a greater concern that had been playing on Dahninos' mind, along with
other observations and notes that did not bode well.
Young Noval Antinium had not had the most formal of training through the
great training halls in Korvosa as Dahninos had once had, some 142 mortal years
ago. "Noval had been acused of murder and imprisoned. Later to be forced
to into exile and searched for his faith as he travelled. He returned to
Korvosa to seek revenge, to balance his faith and bring quiet to his
soul." the report stated. The High Banker had never understood
revenge, such a misdirection of the Law and not entirely profitable. He had
looked into why the Bank had not defended the young acolyte against these
allegations personally, and knew his Lord would not be too pleased with his
findings.
The most recent observation this morning however, was indeed the most
concerning. For the first time since becoming High Banker, Dahninos was
unsure of what to do. This was the first time he had seen a cleric rising in
power actually abandon his god. Acolyte sometimes left, initiates had a vast
array of reasons and excuses to leave, but someone of rising prominence… He
could hardly believe the report when it was handed to him.
He was broken from his thoughts by a messenger landing on the balcony.
“Excuse me High Banker. Lord Abadar, Master of the First Vault has returned
from his visitations on Occipitus and will hold high council. Your attendance
is required”
…
I like it. Maybe he abandoned Abadar of the Shelyn!
