Bringing Verik In
After taking Verik and his murderous henchmen prisoner. They thoroughly search the butchers shop.
They discover a hidden cache in a pig style, guarded by two angry boars; the boars are shot down with little ado and the cache plundered.
The prawn creatures in the sewerage pit are left alone, no one really wants to venture into the muck.
The two boars and two pigs are slaughtered, cut up and given to the down trodden folk outside. While grateful they express disappointment that the free meat trade will not be continuing.
The heroes load the prisoners onto a cart and take them to Citadel Volyshenek. Field Marshal Kroft happily accepts the prisoners and gives them to a rather shifty guardsman named Seth who is asked to discover the truth about what happened.
She also raise the topic of the gnomes prisoner Hookshanks that was brought to her; she informs them that there is little point in detaining him any longer. There is no hard evidence of murder or any serious crime and she informs the party he will probably escape with a vice tax. She just wants to issue the viice tax and get him out of the citadel. The heroes offer an alternative and convince her to release him into their custody. She agrees under the provisio that they don't anything to the gnome that would force her to treat the heroes as criminals.
Justin takes the gnome away and beats him within an inch of his life.
A night at the tavern
That night the heroes encounter a drunken guard that has abandoned his post. They convnce him to return and bring him back to Citadel Volyshenek. His name is Grau.
The Eel's End and the Spider King
The following day they return to Citadel Volyshenek and witness the hanging of all five guards; Gritt momentarily stops the hanging of Verik to protest but the Field Marshall is adamant. She says he was being hung for sedition against the crown; Verik had confessed to deliberately giving free meat to curry favour with the poor in the hopes of recruiting them into a rebellion. The hanging resumes and all five guards are hung.
They then meet with the Field Marshal and are given their next assignment; to meet an underworld figure, Devargo Barvasi, in the hopes of gaining some dirt on a troublesome ambassador from Chelliax. They also meet a friend of the Field Marshall called Vencarlo Orisini; a renowned swordplay instructor who runs a fighting school in Old Korvosa, He offers to walk with the heroes to Old Korvosa. Along the way the heroes learn that Grau and Sabina used to be his students and that both were promising students. Though it is clear to some of the heroes that some angst remains and that some kind of falling out must have happened.
The heroes part ways with Vencarlo and head over to Eel's End to meet the King of Spiders, the prominent underworld figure. They successfully gain an audience and the negotiations for purchasing some information on the ambassador are going well until the King of Spiders recognizes Sparrowhawk as a Sable Marine. He orders his cronies to attack. A long fight ensues and the heroes emerge victorious, defeating the King of Spiders, several thugs and some spiders; including a humanoid spider creature.
There is some uncertainty over what to do about the King of Spiders who is not dead. Some want him dead, some want him arrested (but know he will probably escape with a vice tax). Watson protests the loudest over not killing him in cold blood but Mandraiv tricks Watson. Convincing him that he has been left unharmed but in reality cuts his throat and throws him into the river.
The heroes then return and are rewarded by the Field Marshall Kroft; it is strongly alluded that Devargo is dead and she seems particularly pleased. Watson is a little baffled.
